What we need from a Senior Art Director

At Preston Spire, a Senior Art Director is a masterful visual storyteller responsible for consistently delivering brand-building, conceptual ideas and executing high-caliber creative across all media platforms. You will expertly partner with nationally recognized, award-winning copywriters to bring ridiculously big ideas to life, from initial concept to polished, final execution, with a strong emphasis on innovative digital and social experiences. This role requires you to lead by example, mentor junior creatives, and maintain a passion for pushing boundaries while keeping all work strategically sound.

  • Conceive and develop innovative ideas, and visual stylistic direction in partnership with a copywriter teammate.
  • Translate big ideas into high-quality, executed creative work for print, broadcast, experiential, and all digital channels, including social media.
  • Create engaging social creative that resonates with target audiences, aligns with brand voice, and leverages the latest platform features and trends.
  • Articulate what drives engagement on social platforms and translate those insights into compelling, platform-specific creative work.
  • Oversee projects from strategic concept development to final completion, including attending and directing photo shoots and video/broadcast production.
  • Present and sell creative concepts to internal teams and clients in a confident, professional, and persuasive manner.
  • Collaborate closely and professionally with Account, Strategy, Production, and Project Management teams to ensure creative products are delivered on time and on budget.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current industry trends, technology, pop culture, and best practices in social media, digital, and design.
  • Mentor and provide direction and constructive feedback to Art Directors, Designers, and other team members, fostering their growth and skill development.
  • Manage and gracefully prioritize multiple complex projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

Ideal experience

  • Years of experience and industry background
    • 4+ years of creative experience as an Art Director, preferably in an advertising agency or design firm.
    • An online portfolio showcasing award-winning creative work with versatility across all media, demonstrating originality, problem-solving and a range of concepts from digital and social to print and video.
    • Experience overseeing the concept and execution of digital work, campaigns, websites, and social media assets.
  • Technical or creative skills
    • Expert-level Art Direction skills, visual stylistic direction, and the ability to design when needed.
    • Thorough understanding of photography, typography, layout, and printing processes.
    • Demonstrated ability to develop unique, award-winning quality communications.
    • Digital-first mindset with experience concepting and producing social assets.
  • Tools, platforms, certifications
    • Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
    • Working knowledge of the Google  Suite, especially Google Docs, and Google Slides.
    • Familiarity with Canva and CapCut is highly desirable for quick content creation.
  • Soft skills, leadership potential, mindset
    • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and delegate responsibilities to designers.
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate and defend creative rationale.
    • Highly motivated, ambitious, and passionate about pushing for original and courageous ideas.
    • A collaborative team player with a positive and constructive attitude, even under pressure.
    • Ability to accept and interpret feedback well, applying it to refine concepts.

  • This position is based in Minneapolis
  • We embrace a hybrid work model, with three days in the office (Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday) and two days remote (Tuesday and Friday)
